TRANG'S STORY

I grew up in Vietnam. My mom was a single mother and worked three jobs at a time to provide for us. Her hard work took a toll on her health. By the time I was 5, I knew I wanted to be a doctor so I could help people like my mom and earn a good wage so I wouldn’t have to worry about putting food on the table.

When I was in eighth grade, we moved to the United States. I could understand English but struggled to speak it. I was thrown into a classroom with teachers who could not help me and peers who viewed me as an outsider. By ninth grade, luckily, I found the Boys & Girls Club.

I instantly felt at home. The staff were so welcoming as were the members. My English really started to improve as I felt comfortable enough to try speaking. I began tutoring members in math and joined the College Bound and Keystone programs. I made real friends who supported and encouraged my dreams! Your support of our Club is essential to provide these life-changing programs to kids in our community.

With the help of the College Bound program, I charted a course to college and ultimately medical school that was attainable and fiscally responsible. I decided to join the ROTC and received a full scholarship to University of Arizona where I am majoring in nursing. Upon graduation, I plan to serve in the Navy as a nurse and then head to medical school. This plan will allow me to achieve my dream of becoming a doctor while serving our great country and minimizing student debt.

The Boys & Girls Club was a critical partner in getting me to where I am now. They helped me to become conversational in English. They provided a roadmap to college with course planning, standardized test prep, college visits, career guidance, and, perhaps most importantly, financial planning. They gave me opportunities to serve my community as a tutor and volunteer. They gave me a support network outside my immediate family.

The Club’s motto is Great Futures Start Here and it’s true, because you invest in the futures of youth like me. Your gift will provide hundreds of local youth with the College Bound, Keystone, and mentoring programs and so, so much more. Thank you for making your donation today!

Gratefully,
